Meet the first class: Six media startups get accelerated into Silicon Valley by Matter

Matter, formerly known as the Public Media Accelerator, aims to join “the values of public media” to “the mindsets of Silicon Valley entrepreneurship.”

I’m excited to see this… and just a little bit disappointed with the model. On the one hand, of course, it’s great to see the innovative spirit of S.V. applied to the world of public media. But, what’s a bit sad, is that a) there’s really no commitment to public media, and b)this is designed for VC’s seeking commercial success, not social success. While I cheer Knight and KQED for the effort, I hope future iterations of the Matter prototype will reward social entrepreneurs for social innovation.
