Enterprise Reporter – KARE 11 & MPR Pilot Program

KARE 11, the NBC television affiliate in the Twin Cities and MPR News are looking for a hard-hitting, sharp-thinking enterprise news reporter to deliver high quality, exclusive, visual journalism across platforms. The position is for someone who is hungry to set the news agenda, not follow one. The ideal candidate will have excellent research, writing, reporting, social media and broadcast presentation skills. They’ll also naturally put our audiences and communities first, working in service of Minnesotans who count on KARE11 and MPR News. The reporter will split their time between organizations — reporting to both KARE 11 and MPR News editors – in a two-year pilot collaboration. Stories will typically appear on both companies’ broadcasts and web sites.

Responsibilities:

*         Constructively shape a new, hybrid position and develop a steady stream of reporting ideas.

*         Use sources, documents, computer-assisted reporting, social media, etc. to report exclusive stories that impact Minnesotans.

*         Work with both organizations’ to maximize impact and reach of stories.

*         Produce for web site, social and mobile channels any additional audio, visual material or related resources; possibly contribute to blogs and podcasts. Assist other reporters, producers and editors with information.

*         When needed, provide quick-turn stories on varied subjects.

*         When needed, join a larger project team.

*         Relay news and trends to others Assist in promoting KARE11 and MPR News’ visibility through public events.

*         Adhere to all policies and practices of KARE 11 and MPR News with regard to any electronic or hard copy documentation from the start of a story or project to its distribution, including storage, indexing, and archiving.

*         Adhere to the news organizations’ ethics guidelines.

Required education and experience:

*         Ten years’ experience as a successful visual journalist with a strong background on television.

*          Demonstrated accomplishment in distinctive enterprise reporting.

*          Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

*         Demonstrated expertise with web-based reporting tools, data bases.

*         Demonstrated expertise, knowledge and training in at least one newsworthy topic area.

Required skills, knowledge and abilities

*         Exceptional reporting skills and news intuition Ability to see and develop distinct news enterprise stories Ability to deliver stories of the highest standard Exceptional broadcast news abilities with demonstrated expertise in visual reporting.

*         Careful researcher, writer and skilled interviewer.

*         Deft and creative with social media.

*         Strong skills shooting, editing video and recording audio.

*         Excellent at live reports and host two-ways.

*         Advanced problem-solving skills.

*         Able to work independently with minimal supervision, even in complicated situations.

*         Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple assignments.

*         Commitment and ability to develop broad source list.

*         A team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well with diverse groups. Ability to take initiative and receive constructive feedback.

*         Ability to represent KARE11 and MPR News in official functions.
